The Epson PictureMate PM-400 Personal Photo Lab produces high-quality images up to 5 by 7 inches in size, but the cost of even 4-by-6 photos is greater than with Epson’s 4-by-6 specialized photo printers. The Epson PM-400 is not a professional photo printer, but for the price, you get a reasonably small and elegant wireless gadget that can produce sharp images at decent rates. Once the Epson PictureMate PM-400 is put to work, the results are rather amazing. According to the company, a picture may be printed in as little as 36 seconds.
The quickest print time we encountered was 42 seconds. That was using the five sheets of Epson Photo Paper Glossy paper that came with the printer. The colors were pretty brilliant regardless of the style of the photograph (landscape, building, or portrait), and the skin tones were rather realistic. However, printing made the darker originals look darker.
The Epson PictureMate PM-400 is a beautiful printer, particularly when folded and at just 9 inches wide, 6.9 inches deep, and 3.3 inches tall. The all-white body is not spectacular, but the shiny lid elevates its appearance. To properly shut the gadget, the outside edge of the lid and the bottom edge of the tray must align exactly. This streamlined design simplifies the PM-400’s appearance. If you have a tiny workplace or don’t have a dedicated workspace, it’s easy to move this printer as needed; it weighs just 4 pounds, plus a little more with the ink and paper.
In terms of overall performance, the Epson PictureMate PM-400 is at the top of its class of midsize printers. The disadvantage intrinsic to the performance of this computer, however, contradicts its rank. This model produces colors as well as computers costing hundreds of dollars more, but the resolution is terrible. This device offers a wide dynamic range, but the dark grays are underexposed. This machine offers a below-average cost per print, yet it is rather costly. Despite its flaws, this machine fills a need in the market left by other mid-size models: it is small and produces high-quality prints up to 5 x 7 inches.
